Playing with the Chicks Outside - by Jacob, Julian, and Troy

Today we got to play with our chicks outside. We sat in a circle and let the chicks run. One of them almost got out and Troy and Jacob made "The Wall Of China." Three of them pooped. The chicks are so cute!

Our Recycling Center

To review graphing, we made these fun recycling centers. First, we went on a trash hunt around the school and collected small pieces of plastic and paper (Mr. McEvoy was very happy to see us doing this!) Then we came back to the classroom and sorted our trash along with the sea glass that I passed out. After that, we made two types of graphs to represent our data (how many pieces of each type of trash that we had) - a tally chart and a bar graph. Finally, we put it all together into the project shown below.

Chick Update

I walked into two more healthy hatched chicks this morning. I could hardly believe it! Then I noticed that we had one egg that was partially cracked open and the little guy had his whole head sticking out. I watched him carefully all morning thinking that he would hatch at any moment but it was apparent that he wasn't coming out on his own. So with half of the class watching, I helped hatch him. What a wonderful experience for all of us.

And here he/she is at the end of the day - as cute and as fluffy as can be!

More Opinion Writing

We are very focused on the new common core writing standards in our classroom. One of the three types of writing that is required in the common core is opinion writing. In second grade, the kids have to start out with a main idea by stating their opinion and then back it up with reasons and support. They also need to use linking words to link all of their reasons together. For this prompt, the kids wrote if they think students should have a summer break or not.

The Life Cycle of a Plant and other Plant Facts

As part of our life cycles unit, we learned about the life cycle of a plant and a whole bunch more facts about plants. The kids can even tell you how plants make their own food. Of course, we also planted our own plants. You can see radishes, corn, beans, and sunflowers all growing.

We also did this great project created by Linda Kamp to help reinforce everything that we are learning.

Fraction Pizza

We made these cute little pizzas to review fractions in our class. The kids got to choose their toppings (although they were required to do at least one slice of each topping) and decorate their pizza. But, before they could start, they needed plan - how many slices of each they were going to have. Once they had completed their plan, they went to work cutting and gluing. At the end, they had to write the fraction to show how many pieces of each topping. This was a little tricky because some of the kids wanted to write the number of toppings in their factions rather than the number of SLICES with the topping. (Thanks to Amy Lemons!)

More Chicks!

We had five more babies hatch last night bringing our total to seven. Plus, Jacob's grandma brought in seven bantam chicks from the Alpine Feed Store. We are in chick heaven!!!

Our timelines are complete!

Our timelines look great! I am always so impressed at the final product. This project is such a good way to learn about timelines and makes a wonderful keepsake.

We Have Babies!!!

What an exciting day in Room 2! Two sweet little babies hatched from their eggs! When I left tonight there were a few more cracked shells so we are hoping for even more chicks.

Glue and Macaroni!!!

I finally resorted to glue and macaroni to help us get the concept of quotations marks!!! This was a tough concept for these kiddos so I was determined to do whatever it takes for them to get it. It has been a long time since I have used macaroni noodles to teach a lesson! (Like since I taught kindergarten five years ago!)

Love Letters from Home

To kick off testing this week, our parents secretly sent in love letters of encouragement. Here we are reading the letters before we begin the BIG test.
