What have we been up to???

We have been very busy in Room 2! This week we read Mossy by Jan Brett and did a little character analysis as well as discuss the main idea and details. When we make inferences about characters we always look for evidence in the text to back-up our ideas. Then the kids completed this adorable turtle project where they wrote out the main idea and details and the beginning, middle, and end of the story.

We also read Hey, Little Ant by Phillip and Hannah Hoose which led us into opinion writing. In the story, a boy has to decide if he is going to SQUISH an ant or not. Both the boy and the ant give reasons as to why or why not the ant should or shouldn't be squished. In the end, the authors let the reader decide if the ant should be squished.

In math, we started multiplication. We worked in pairs today and made equal groups of objects. We then wrote both repeated addition sentences and multiplication sentences.

Making Ten

We are all about using different addition and subtraction strategies in our classroom right now. A BIG one that we are practicing a lot is making ten to add numbers. We used Skittles last week to practice this skill. Food always works!!!

Henry and Mudge, Doubles, and Verbs

We LOVE Henry and Mudge books!! We have been using them to study various reading strategies and for our first opinion writing. To help with this first opinion writing we wrote all about Mudge and did this cute craftivity (from Amy Lemons).

We are also learning about verbs and how they are action words. We used superheroes to make this learning stick.

In math, we are learning various addition and subtraction strategies. We are all about "Doubles" and "Doubles +1" right now. To help learn our doubles, we made these gum ball machines (from Saddle Up in Second Grade).
